(English) Albanian

Albanian (shqip or gjuha shqipe, meaning Albanian language) is an Indo-European language spoken by over five million people, primarily in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Greece. There are also some Albanian speakers in Serbia and Montenegro. Dialects of Albanian are also spoken in Italy and Ukraine.

As a consequence of Albanian migration, Albanian is also spoken in other parts of the world, in particular in Europe, the USA, and Turkey. The people of the diaspora speaking Albanian as native language are more than the number of Albanian speakers living in the Balkan region.

Albanian was demonstrated to be an Indo-European language in 1854 by the philologist Franz Bopp. The Albanian language constitutes its own branch of the Indo-European language family. Since World War II, standard Albanian used in Albania has been based on the Tosk dialect. Kosovo and other areas where Albanian is an official language adopted the Tosk standard in 1969.
